Benefits of Wind Energy

Small-scale net-metered wind turbine systems are prominently featured in the Vermont Wind Energy Demonstration Program.  These systems are connected to the electric grid and lower electricity demand from the electric utility.  Net-metered wind turbines are generally smaller (in terms of tower height, rotor diameter, and amount of energy generated) than wind turbines at commercial wind facilities.

Benefits

  • Clean Energy : Wind energy is clean energy.  Small-scale wind turbines generate energy that is emissions-free and does not contribute to global climate change, smog formation or acid rain.
  • Stable energy and a lower electric bill:  Because its fuel source (wind) is free and quite predictable over the long-term, a wind turbine provides a hedge against uncertainties in electricity rates by lowering your monthly electric bill.  With the expected increases in retail electric rates, this stability should prove even more valuable in the years to come.
  • Self-sufficiency: Energy that is produced locally is energy that doesn't need to be supplied from an electric utility.  Some net-metered wind turbine system configurations, such as the 900W Whisper 100 at Spotted Dog Farm (East Brookfield), also include a battery-backup to maintain reliability during power outages.
  • Land-use compatibility: net-metered wind turbine systems operate on a relatively small footprint, and are readily compatible with many existing land uses, including agricultural sites and schoolyards.
