Vermont Wind Energy Demonstration Program

Informational Resources on Small Wind Energy Systems

Interest in small wind energy systems and the clean energy they produce is growing rapidly in Vermont.  The cost of these systems is high, but can be offset by available grants and tax credits together with the value of electricity that they generate.

A good first step is to consult the county-level maps of Vermont's estimated wind resources to see where your property lies with respect to average wind speeds. Then you will want to talk with an approved Vermont Wind Partner to explore options for different wind turbine configurations. If you are planning on net-metering (i.e. feeding excess energy that you generate back to the electric grid), you will need a Certificate of Public Good (CPG) from the Vermont Public Service Board.

"Net Metering" Basics

The Vermont Department of Public Service (DPS) maintains a page containing everything you'd ever want to know about net metering in Vermont, including information on obtaining a Certificate of Public Good (CPG), and a link to the CPG application.
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has an informative FAQ on net metering as well.
Interconnection Safety and Technological Requirements for net metered systems are published by the Public Service Board.
The Net Metering Law is Title 30 Section 219a of the Vermont Statutes.

Small Wind System Installers

The Renewable Energy Resource Center (RERC) maintains a database of approved Vermont Wind Partners  to consult for small wind turbine siting and installation.

The page maintained by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) contains a plethora of information specific to Vermont, and links to other wind energy resources. Some information may be out of date.

Siting a Wind Turbine on Your Property: Small Wind Technology and Vermont's Scenic Landscape
Landscape Architect Jean Vissering produced this 12-page booklet under contract with the Vermont Public Service Board, as an aid for siting small, net-metered wind turbines in Vermont. The booklet addresses wind turbine aesthetics and ways to maximize both power and beauty.
